First Ever Bidvest Maccabi Fun Run a huge success!

19 June 2018
Maccabi SA has had a shift in mind-set over the last few years in that as an organisation, it has looked to engage the community through mass participation and fun events on an ongoing basis. The Maccabi Games of course is a huge coup and luckily for Maccabi SA, needs very little marketing and promotion. It’s the other potential areas to bring sporting opportunities to the Jewish community that needed to be strengthened

Inspired by Maccabi Great Britain, Maccabi SA embarked on a mission in early 2018 to have their first ever Community Fun Run and follow the successes of the Great Britain based Maccabi Fun Run. With the help and guidance of Global Maccabi Fun Run Coordinator, Danielle Bensky (based in Israel), together with Maccabi SA Sports Director Alain Nathan, planning got underway and the Fun Run immediately started taking shape.

The stature and capacity of the event was dramatically boosted with the landing of Bidvest as the headline sponsor. A widespread marketing campaign then ensued that engaged the community at large which resulted in Maccabi SA’s first ever Fun Run being attended by 425 participants, a very similar number to Maccabi Great Britain’s first Fun Run of 2007. This coming weekend will see Maccabi GB exceed 6000 participants in the 11th edition of the Fun Run in London.

The Bidvest Maccabi Fun Run took place on Sunday 17 June at Huddle Park, Linksfield JHB. With perfect weather on the day, families with strollers and dogs came out to take part in the 1KM Kiddies Dash as well as the more challenging 5KM route. Food vendors, jumping castles and face painters were all on hand to make sure the day had something for everyone. The Bidvest Maccabi Fun Run also benefitted 15 Jewish Charities and Organisations. The Charities taking part were registered beneficiaries with Maccabi SA and in turn every entry that was designated to a specific Charity, that charity kept the entry money. This arrangement between Maccabi and the charities is a new way of raising funds as a community and ensuring the Fun Run has a wide a reach as possible.

Neil Meyerowitz finished the 5KM course first in a blistering time of 19:24. An excellent time considering the course was a trail through Huddle Park and not on road. A young Gilad Arieli finished hot on his heels with a time of 20:08. While some were serious about their running, other to a more leisurely approach to the day but all participants finished the course and thoroughly enjoyed it. A very special entry into the run was Dr Vic Boston who has in the previous week completed his 42nd Comrades Marathon.

Maccabi SA is aiming to grow the event by doubling attendance in 2019 and is looking forward to sharing in this event with the community next year. An important note of thank must be mentioned to our generous sponsors: Bidvest, Pureau Water, Busby Promo, Barron and Robin Ruth. The event would not have been possible without the following partners: European Maccabi Confederation, Chai FM, Cortac, Farrell Cohen Physiotherapists, Huddle Park, Hatzolah and Medi Response. Maccabi SA Chairman, Cliff Garrun, said: “The Fun Run team has done an amazing job in getting such a well organised and well attended event together and that this is only the beginning of new and dynamic events as Maccabi keeps evolving to better serve the Jewish Community”.
