On 6 March 2016, 50 young cricketers attended the first round of trials at Crawford School in Sandton in preparation for the 20th Maccabiah in 2017. Collectively the boys represented eight different schools. They were put through their paces with sessions in the nets and short match scenario exercises that tested their batting, bowling and fielding skills, as well as their temperament. The boys also had to contend with the scorching Johannesburg heat, which was a useful indicator of what they can expect in the Israeli summer.
A squad of 30 players was selected from the trials. This group will be broken down into two teams that will play against each other at National Trials taking place on 1 and 2 May 2016 at Crawford Sandton. They will be joined by a team from Cape Town along with some Durban players, to determine the final squad. The final Maccabi SA Junior squad will then undergo regular training sessions, team building exercises and also undertake fundraising activities to help subsidise their Maccabiah expenses.
All the signs are there that this team will fly the South African flag high and continue our history of winning ways at the Maccabiah.
