Maccabi SA Football Hosts Selwyn Segal Team

27 May 2016
On 21 April 2016 the Maccabi SA Junior Football squad hosted a training session and friendly matches for the Selwyn Segal Eagles at the Discovery Soccer Park. The event was part of the squad’s development programme as they prepare for the Maccabi games in Israel next July.

“In addition to preparing the boys for the games with excellent coaching and sports science, we recognise the importance of developing these young athletes as leaders and contributors to the community” commented Ryan Kalk, Maccabi SA Football General Manager.

A total of 22 boys from the Maccabi SA U16 and U18 Football squads, as well as their coaches Rui de Sousa and Daniel Costa Gil, spent time with the Selwyn Segal Eagles going through various football drills and skills. The training session also included two 5-a-side matches where the Maccabi players and Selwyn Segal Eagles mixed to form combined teams. The games were thoroughly enjoyed by those on the field, as well as the group of spectators from Selwyn Segal. The Eagles were also presented with new soccer kit by Ashley Kotzin, the MD of FORWARDZONE. “We would like to express our utmost gratitude to Maccabi SA and FORWARDZONE. The members of our team and spectators all came back overflowing with excitement and joy” said Susan Shroeder, Head of Life Enrichment & Head Occupational Therapist at Selwyn Segal.  “Our soccer team, thoroughly enjoyed the game they played with the Maccabi boys.  They were thrilled with the soccer attire that was donated and returned home feeling privileged and beyond excited about the opportunity they were given.  It is a mark of Maccabi’s great sportsmanship and generosity that they so graciously shared the field with them.  Thank you Maccabi!” added CEO of the Chevrah Kadisha, Michael Sieff.

Social responsibility and outreach is an integral part of the U16 and U18 football teams’ preparation for the 20th Maccabiah in 2017. The boys are currently training three times a week with two full time dedicated coaches, and playing Sunday matches in the Soweto Football Academy league. In addition the boys will receive sports science support from PSL team staff.

Maccabi SA would like to thank FORWARDZONE for sponsoring new kit for the Selwyn Segal team as well as Discovery Soccer Park for hosting the event and assisting with Maccabi SA’s contribution to Tikkun Olam. Maccabi SA is looking forward to future and meaningful interactions with The Eagles from Selwyn Segal.
