Maccabi SA has had a successful history at the Maccabiah with many teams and individuals winning medals, starting at the 1953 Games and at every Maccabiah since, bringing home a total of 113 medals to date. Team SA has won gold at 16 out of 17 Games.

Lawn bowls in general has unfortunately seen a drop in participation – at one stage 25% of all bowlers in South Africa were Jewish. Under the enthusiastic leadership of the late Raymond Leibman, who successfully hosted the first Maccabi National Bowls Tournament in 18 years at Killarney Country Club in Johannesburg in 2014, Maccabi SA Bowls underwent a revival.

Brandon Wysoke has taken over the leadership of Maccabi SA bowls, and in addition to organising recreational bowls tournaments, is also focused on putting a strong team together for the 2022 Maccabiah. He is aiming to host at least one national bowls tournament in 2021 in preparations for the Games. Keep an eye on our website and social media for details.
