The 10s is the brainchild of rugby legends Bob Skinstad and Robbie Fleck and is billed as the biggest ten-a-side rugby tournament in the world. This is Maccabi\u2019s second appearance at the 10s, having won the plate final on their event debut in 2018.<\/p>\n
This year a younger side was selected by manager Brad Berger, and coaches Paul Cohen and Tyrell Tintinger, with a few of the first team regulars not available. The squad included members who participated in the 2017 Maccabiah in Israel, including Berger (2017 Manager), Cohen (2017 Captain) and Tintinger, where they performed admirably and won the gold medal in 7s and silver in 15s. Berger, Cohen and Tintinger are all experienced Maccabians, having also taken part in 2013 and Tintinger in the 2009 Games.<\/p>\n
Captained by Pirates 1st<\/sup> team\u2019s Brent Kier, with Vice Captain Nick Zille from UCT\u2019s 1st<\/sup> team, who have also both represented SA at the Maccabiah, the boys faced a tough group in the 2nd<\/sup> League on the opening day of the 10s, with a few very close results not going their way. On day 2 they came back stronger, winning the quarter final 19-12. In the semi they faced an experienced Super Vereeniging team and narrowly lost 7-5, with Zille scoring for Maccabi. This was a great result for a young team who are in a building phase, with a number of talented junior players coming up through the ranks.<\/p>\n Maccabi SA\u2019s Player of the Tournament was awarded to Brent Shone, who currently plays for UCT.<\/p>\n \u2018\u2019The 10s was a really good experience for the side and all the players learnt a lot about what it takes to play senior rugby. A few of the guys have put their hand up for selection for the Maccabi SA Sevens squad that will be announced in March, which will form the foundation of the team to be taking part in some exciting upcoming events\u201d said Berger. \u2018\u2019A big thank you to Farrell Cohen whose physio skills once again ensured the players were well looked after, and also many thanks to Ashley Kotzin, CEO of ForwardZone, who generously sponsored the team, thus making it all possible for us,\u201d added Berger.<\/p>\n \u201cAs a sports management company, we are proud to be involved with the Maccabi 10\u2019s rugby team.
