Maccabi SA mourns the passing of Honorary Life President

27 March 2023
Maccabi SA Honorary Life President, George Mendelsohn, passed away on Saturday 25th March 2023 at 92 years of age.

George joined Maccabi SA in 1950 as a soccer player, and went on to become a respected administrator, selector and leader of the organisation for over two decades. He attended six Maccabi Games in various capacities: 1973 (Football Manager/Coach); 1977 (SA Team Assistant Manager); 1981 (General Manager); 1985 (Head of Delegation); 1989 (joint Head of Delegation) and 1993 (joint Head of Delegation).

George served as Chairman of Maccabi SA from 1982–1987 and guided the movement through the difficult years of isolation.

In recognition of his significant contribution he was made Honorary Life President in 1994, and in 1997 he received the prestigious global Yakir Award, which is the highest honour bestowed by Maccabi World Union for outstanding services.

George’s passion for Maccabi has continued to shine through the generations – his son Alan competed in Judo at the 1981 Maccabi Games and was Judo Manager in 1997. Grandsons’ Jay Budler competed in rugby in 2009 and Natan Mendelsohn in soccer in 2013.

Cliff Garrun, Chairman of Maccabi SA said: “We have lost one of the great leaders, supporters and friends of the Maccabi movement. We are deeply grateful for George’s tireless service, dedication and guidance, which ensured that the organisation continued to grow and thrive.’’

The Board of Directors wish his wife, Barbara, and all the family a long life. May his memory be a blessing.
