Maccabi SA won the Plate Final on their debut in 2018, and in 2019 reached the Semi-Finals of the 2nd League, narrowly losing 7-5.
The squad is managed and coached by Maccabi SA Rugby Convenor Brad Berger, assisted by Jon Biderman-Pam, who is Club Director of Ikey Tigers. Returning senior players include Brent Kier and Dylan Koll from Pirates, and Jesse Willensky and Nick Zille from UCT. Many of the players are past pupils of King David Linksfield.
Berger is an experienced Maccabian, having taken part in the 2013 Games, and serving as Rugby Manager in 2017, bringing home gold in 7s and silver for 15s. ‘’We have a well-represented team this year, with guys who have played at a high level of rugby. We have put in a lot of hard work training rain or shine at Protea Park, and come 31 Jan I am confident Team Maccabi SA will put on a strong showing,’’ said Berger.
Another experienced Maccabian involved in the event is physiotherapist Farrell Cohen, who is making sure the team are in fighting form in the build up to and during the tournament.
“We wish Brad and the squad all the very best for the tournament. With the Maccabiah taking place in 2021, this is a great event to test our skills and we look forward to seeing what the boys can do,’’ said Cliff Garrun, Chairman of Maccabi SA.
Many thanks to Ashley Kotzin at Forwardzone for once again sponsoring the team.
