Maccabi South Africa had four athletes taking part in the 2023 Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina in Dec/Jan 2024.
Team Maccabi SA has competed at the 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015 Pan Am Games in various sports including Football, Futsal, Golf, Swimming and Tennis, bringing home many medals from all Games barring one. We are grateful to CLAM (Maccabi Latin America) for once again inviting us and giving our athletes the opportunity to compete on the world stage and experience the incredible energy and hospitality of our South American Maccabi family.
At the 2023 Pan Am Games, Team SA consisted of Capetonians Rob Sulcas and Peter Greenwall who competed in the Men’s 55+ Padel and, in an interesting twist, Jo’burgers Nissim Levy and Hadley Lasarow who played for our sometimes arch nemesis but this time much loved teammates Maccabi Australia, in Men’s 55+ Football. The Aussie team also featured some Argentinian players. We love this southern hemisphere team spirit!
This was Rob’s EIGHTH! time representing Maccabi SA and Peter, Nissim and Hadley’s first time at a Maccabi Games.
PADEL: Rob and Peter were undefeated going into the final where they lost in a very tight contest 7-5 6-4 to Argentina. In the Nations Event, the pair teamed up with Maccabi Switzerland and won bronze. Peter Greenwall was awarded MVP in the age category.
FOOTBALL: Australia (including our Saffas) beat Mexico 2-1 in the playoff and came 5th overall in a very competitive age category.
Mazel tov to Team SA who once again delivered and did us proud – we may have been a small delegation but we made up for it with so much gees (and two medals)!
