Sports

Maccabi SA’s events programme consists of a diverse range of activities which accommodate the needs, interests and skills levels of all types of sportspersons, including social, recreational and competitive sport.

We cater for all ages, from primary school to active senior citizens in their 90’s, and we host events locally, mostly in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and also internationally. In everything we do we seek to instil our values and principles of teamwork, sportsmanship, respect, compassion, self-discipline and good citizenship.

Some of our more niche sports are geared towards the Maccabi Games, while sports like bowls, cricket, futsal, golf squash and table tennis have ongoing community involvement via leagues and regular events. In addition to the list on the left of the page, we have also competed in basketball, bridge and chess at the Games and are exploring interest in these sports for 2022.

The Maccabi Games currently offers 44 sporting events, including seven new sports (3v3 Basketball, Beach Football, Bouldering, Sailing, Skateboarding, Surfing and the return of Weightlifting) and new disciplines (BMX and track cycling). Maccabi SA focuses on those sports which have the most interest, participation and importantly, talent! If there are any sports which we do not offer but at which you excel and would like to compete in, please contact us. A reminder that athlete participation in the Games is open to Jewish persons only.

Each Maccabi SA sport is headed up by a volunteer Sports Convenor. Their role is twofold: to organise and manage a local programme of events, and to select and manage team(s) and/or individuals to compete at the Maccabiah and other Regional Games.

If you have any questions or require further information, please contact our Head Office or the relevant Maccabi SA Convenors.
