Martial Arts

BACKGROUND

KARATE: Competing at the Maccabiah in karate is one of the greatest highlights of any Jewish karate-ka’s competition calendar. Maccabi SA first competed at the 1973 Games, later winning four medals at the 1977 Games and eight medals in 1981, including Team gold.

The 90’s were also a great success for Team SA who bagged a further 16 medals. Many of these medals were won by SA’s legendary world champions, father-and-son Malcolm Dorfman and Dr Shane Dorfman, 9th Dan and 7th Dan respectively. In 2005 and 2013, Team SA won a further eight medals in total.

JUDO: In 1961 Maccabi SA sent a Goodwill Tour to the Games and won the first SA judo medal in 1973. Since then Team SA has won a further 12 medals, last competing at the 2005 Games where they won two bronze medals.

TAEKWONDO: We have only had one entrant in taekwondo who competed at the 2013 Games, bringing home a bronze medal.

CURRENT

Maccabi SA is looking to expand and strengthen our martial arts programme. We do not favour specific styles, instead the priorities are commitment to the team, training and upholding the value system.

Keep an eye on our website and social media for details on preparation for the 2022 Games.
